Lagarde was the first woman to become finance minister of a G8 economy, and is the first woman to head the IMF.

She is the widow of former Prime Minister of India. After her husband's assassination in 1991, she was invited by Congress leaders to take over the government, but she refused and publicly stayed away from politics. She finally agreed to join politics in 1997,and was elected as President of the Congress in 1998.
